Standards based units of study

The units of work taught in each key learning area are based on the Australian Curriculum and Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). These standards identify what is important for students to achieve at different stages of their schooling, set standards for those achievements and provide a clear basis for reporting to parents and for planning programs. Classroom program plans have been developed around these standards and with consideration of the Monivae College Strategic Intent and identification of the Monivae Graduate 2020.

Homework

Monivae College views the setting and completion of home study as an integral part of the education process. The College believes that this reinforces and enriches the curriculum, encourages excellence, develops organisational and time management skills, and the capacity to assume self responsibility for learning. Students are encouraged to realise that a consistent effort in all classes and an organised approach to home study will maximise their likelihood of academic success.

Monivae's Homework Policy (which can be accessed via the College's homepage and the Student Planner), explains that home study is theoretical and practical work undertaken at home which consolidates and supports work done in school. It encourages initiative, self discipline and self motivation. Home study encompasses a wide range of tasks including vocabulary development, test preparation, completion of set work, assignments, revision, pre-reading and wider reading.

As a general weekly rule, the College recommends the following time allocations to home study:

Year 7

Monday - Thursday night students should be completing a minimum of one hour of homework and study, plus one hour over the weekend.

Year 8

Monday - Thursday night students should be completing a minimum of one and a half hours of homework and study, plus one hour over the weekend.

Years 9 and 10

Monday - Thursday night students should be completing a minimum of two hours of homework and study, plus two hours over the weekend.

Years 11 and 12

Monday - Thursday night students should be completing a minimum of three hours of homework and study, plus six hours over the weekend.

  • Plus Year 11 have two study periods per cycle; and
  • Year 12 have a number of study periods in their timetable which are taken at school.

Maximising this time at school is critical as it will provide an opportunity for set homework to be done and may give the opportunity in the evenings for consolidation of skills in areas of revision, summarising and extension.

In Years 11 and 12 students are expected to take more initiative in planning their study programs. Homework set by the teacher is only part of this program: planning to meet deadlines for assignments and assessment tasks and revising previous work are essential.
